A tactile approach to social responsibility

Over the last year Colab has visited farms and communities across Cote D’Ivoire, developing a dialogue to help develop our insights into how we as a company can approach our Social investments in a collaborative and impactful manner.  The needs of rural farming communities are namely centered around water sanitation, clean energy, health and education.   As a starting point Colab is developing pilot projects in collaboration with several collectives to tackle issues related to access to clean water, and once successfully implemented intend to roll this project out across many communities before tackling other issues that have been communicated to us through unions and village councils representatives.

Clean Water

“In developing countries, about 80% of illnesses are linked to poor water and sanitation conditions. 1 out of every 5 deaths under the age of 5 worldwide is due to a water-related disease. Clean and safe water is essential to healthy living.”

As a part of our Social Responsibility and Sustainability Initiative we are currently delivering a project of providing clean, drinkable water to 6 villages in Cote d`Ivoire with more to follow. This is a pivotal project to provide better quality of life and save lives in the communities we are working with.

  1. Women and children fetch the majority of water for household uses in rural areas. Often this keeps them from attending school or working at a job.
  2. The average distance that women and children for water in Africa and Asia is six kilometres (3.7 miles).
  3. Women carry heavy loads of water (about 20 litres) on their heads. This causes severe damage to the neck and spine over time.

The solution we have developed and are implementing will provide whole villages with ready access to clean safe drinking water. Many areas in Cote D`Ivoire have plentiful ground water supplies. We take the issue seriously and conduct professional Hydrogeological surveys of every site. This ensures the sustainability and suitability of the Aquifer Reservoirs and prevents unwarranted draining of nearby wells and depleting of the reservoir. We have worked to deliver off-grid independent solution for the communities. The system we have decided to use has independent electrical supply and high grade filtering system that filters out mud, organic contaminants, organic pesticides, nitrates, heavy metals and waterborne pathogens. We believe based on the research this is the pivotal and most impactful project providing safety and saving lives that we can undertake.
